California Red-Legged Frog

San Diego Natural History Museum, 2023

The California Red-legged frog became extinct in San Diego County in the mid-70’s due to a variety of causes including introduction of invasive species, pollution, and habitat loss.

The San Diego Natural History Museum has been working alongside other conservation groups to re-introduce these frogs and restore their population. To learn more about the Nat’s conservation efforts, click here.

For the first six months of 2023, we collected the museum’s non-recyclable plastic waste in special bins located throughout the museum. This sculpture was made from that collected plastic waste—120 pounds in total! The plastic can be seen through the ‘truth portals’ on the rock. Special thanks to artist Brian Gibson and the San Diego Natural History Museum for making this sculpture possible.
